Lightweight Fill for a Major Land Remediation Project<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Igelsta Strand in S\u00f6dert\u00e4lje is one of Sweden’s largest land remediation projects, transforming a former industrial site into a new residential district with around 500 homes, a public park and supporting infrastructure. To compensate for loads on the soft ground and minimise future settlement, approximately 5,000 m\u00b3 of Foamit foam glass<\/strong> was used as lightweight fill throughout the project.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

The site had previously housed a sawmill, wood treatment facilities and a paint factory, leaving the ground contaminated with substances including dioxins and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). As part of the remediation, the Municipality of S\u00f6dert\u00e4lje removed contaminated soil before preparing the area for future development. Geotechnical investigations identified settlement risks in several areas, making lightweight fill the preferred solution for load compensation. Based on previous positive experience, Foamit foam glass<\/strong> was selected for its low density, ease of installation and proven geotechnical performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Foamit foam glass was installed beneath roads, utility corridors and other infrastructure, with varying layer thicknesses adapted to changing ground levels and loading conditions. Its ability to be shaped into stable slopes and installed around underground utilities simplified construction on the complex site. The contractor also highlighted the efficient installation process, as the material could be delivered directly to its final location, helping to maintain a high production rate throughout the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The redevelopment of Igelsta Strand demonstrates how lightweight construction and recycled materials can support the transformation of contaminated industrial land into sustainable urban environments. By combining effective load compensation with circular construction principles, the project created a stable foundation for future residential development while contributing to a more resource-efficient use of materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, there are also lightweight clay aggregates and other lightweight filling materials such as EPS, but in my opinion, foam glass is the most used overall. I have worked in the industry for six years and have largely only worked with foam glass.
